Our second week in the USA was a perfect blend of simple joys, reconnections, and, of course, a whole lot of food. With the pace slowing down after the first week, Maggie and I took the opportunity to savor the moments—whether it was spending time with family or revisiting some favorite Louisiana haunts.
Meaningful Moment
One of the most special parts of this week was the time spent with my father-in-law, David. We shared a simple afternoon at “Camp David,” sipping on beers and talking about everything and nothing. I’ve always enjoyed hearing his stories; he’s a man of many experiences, and I always come away from our conversations with new insights. This was a moment of quiet connection that I deeply appreciated, just two guys sharing some drinks and reflecting on life.
A Feast of Louisiana Flavors
Louisiana food is in a league of its own, and this week, we indulged in the best it had to offer. Maggie had been talking up Steamboat Bill’s for a while, so it was a must on our list. True to her word, the fried seafood and Cajun classics did not disappoint. We ordered more than we could handle, but it was worth it—rich, flavorful dishes that felt like a true celebration of the local cuisine.
Another highlight was a visit to Darrell’s in Lake Charles, where I had what might just be the best po’boy of my life. The Surf n’ Turf sandwich was everything I expected from a Louisiana classic and more. We also made stops at Billy’s Boudin & Cracklins for some boudin balls and frozen links, and The Chimes, where I finally got to try charred alligator—a uniquely “Louisiana” experience.
Each meal wasn’t just about the food; it was about the people we shared it with. Lunches and dinners with Maggie’s friends and family felt like celebrations of both the flavors and the relationships we cherish here.
Reconnecting with Friends Like No Time Had Passed
One of the things I love most about visiting Maggie’s old friends is how it feels like no time has passed, even when it’s been years. We spent a lot of this week catching up with friends in Baton Rouge, whether at a local dive bar or over drinks at Brandon and Rachel’s house. There’s a sense of ease in these gatherings, where the years melt away and it feels like we’re just picking up where we left off.
It’s been heartwarming to watch Maggie reconnect with her old co-workers too. Seeing her in her element, surrounded by people who know her so well, was a highlight for me. It reminded me how important these friendships are, and how they’ve stood the test of time and distance.
Coming Week: Georgia Bound
Looking ahead, we’re getting ready for a long road trip to Georgia. We’ll be driving from Lake Charles, which will likely take us around 10 hours, if not more. I’m especially excited to meet Maggie’s extended family on her dad’s side, including her grandmother. That will be a special moment, and I’m really looking forward to it.
We’ve also planned to attend the Georgia National Fair—something I’ve never experienced before. My expectations are high, and I can’t wait to see what it’s all about.
A Few Final Thoughts
As we wrapped up the second week, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the moments we’ve shared—whether it was talking with David over beers, sampling local favorites, or simply watching Maggie reconnect with the people who mean so much to her. This week has been about slowing down, savoring the time with loved ones, and appreciating the culture and warmth that Louisiana offers. It’s these simple, everyday experiences that make our time here feel so special.
